Pleated Skirt

For your skirt with three pleats the following two parameters are needed: waist measurement (in centimetres) and desired length of the skirt (also in centimetres).

Once you enter these measurements into the form below and click the download button, a customised sewing pattern will be generated as a multi-page A4 PDF file.

Which fabric to choose?

For this design, I would recommend jacquard fabric. Jacquard is a woven fabric known for its intricate, raised patterns created during the weaving process (rather than printed on). This gives it a luxurious, three-dimensional texture that perfectly complements structured designs like pleats. It holds creases well when pressed, providing sharp, defined pleats that maintain their shape over time. When combined properly, the skirt can be used for casual or formal wear.

How to sew the design?

The downloaded sewing pattern for this skirt comprises two main pieces: one piece corresponds to the front part of the skirt, and the second piece to a half of your waistband. To complete the full pattern, both pieces need to be mirrored—this will give you the back part of the skirt (which mirrors the front, including the pleats) and the other half of the waistband, allowing you to cut symmetrical components for a balanced fit.

Each of the three pleats on the front (and similarly on the mirrored back) is indicated in the pattern by three dashed blue lines. These lines serve as guides for folding and shaping the fabric to create the pleated effect. In order to create a pleat, the two outer lines need to be pushed toward the middle line, effectively folding the fabric along those guides to form a crisp, even pleat that adds volume and structure to the skirt.

When working with the pattern:

  • Print or trace the pieces at the correct scale, ensuring any grid or measurement marks align properly.
  • For the skirt body: Cut the front piece as is, then flip it over (mirror it) on your fabric to cut the back piece. This ensures the pleats align symmetrically front to back.
  • For the waistband: Cut one half, mirror it to cut the second half, and join them at the center for a full band that wraps around the waist.
  • Keep in mind: Seam allowances are NOT included in the pattern; you have to add them manually.
